Event description

Description

Work alongside fellow Hoos and graduates of DC Central Kitchen’s Culinary Job Training program to help prepare nutritious meals by cutting, chopping, and/or peeling thousands of pounds of otherwise wasted food. The DC Central Kitchen prepares and delivers more than 5,000 meals to partner homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics, halfway houses, and afterschool programs each day. No cooking or food service experience is required.

All volunteers must be 12 years or older. Please note: if you register and are unable to attend, DC Central Kitchen cannot serve the community to the best of their ability. Please be sure to contact us at uvaservice@dchoos.org if your plans should change at least *8 days prior* (4/22) to our shift.

We look forward to seeing you there as we give back to our local community!

What to Wear: Storage space for volunteer personal belongings is limited, so please plan to travel light. All volunteers must wear appropriate and professional attire suitable for an industrial production kitchen. Please wear closed toed shoes, sleeves, and long pants. Shoes with high-grip soles are strongly recommended.

Location: DC Central Kitchen’s main location is located on the ground floor of the Federal City Shelter, a three-story gray building on the southeast corner of 2nd and E Streets NW. The closest metro stop is Judiciary Square on the Red Line. From the Judiciary Square 4th and D Street exit, head south on 4th Street NW, left on D Street NW, left on 1st Street NW, and then left into the service alley just south of Sandwiches by Phillip. The entrance to the Kitchen looks like a service/delivery entrance and is marked by a large sign.

Parking: There is no on-site parking at the Main Kitchen. Limited parking is available in lots at Union Station, on E Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets NW, and on the street. There is metered parking along E Street NW, 1st Street NW and New Jersey Avenue NW, all within a block of the Kitchen.

This event is #open to all alumni, parents, and friends.
