About this event
All alumni, parents, and friends are invited to join us for a Cavs Care activity with the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN).
The Potomac Riverkeeper Network’s mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries. They stop pollution to enhance the safety of our drinking water, protect healthy river habitats, and enhance public use and enjoyment.
Volunteers of all ages are needed to help remove single-use plastics and trash washed along the bank of the river. Please be prepared and dress accordingly. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet and muddy. Please bring water (in your reusable water bottle, of course) and snacks. PRKN will provide gloves, bags, and trash pickers.
At registration, they will ask you to complete a safety waiver to participate in the event (children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who must complete and sign their waiver).
Please join us for a fun and productive morning on the beautiful Potomac near Old Town Alexandria.
Event Location:
Old Town Alexandria (Oronoco Bay Park and Rivergate City Park)
Oronoco Bay Park
100 Madison Street
Alexandria, VA 22314
The Registration table will be set up right at the foot of Madison Street.
***Update regarding Covid-19 and social distancing***
Due to the ongoing pandemic, we will be following safe social distancing practices at this event. PRKN is extending the registration time for their cleanups to be one hour long, starting 30 minutes before the scheduled event start time to prevent overcrowding at the registration table. Masks must be worn at the registration table. We will be taking steps to minimize contact throughout the event.
Street parking is available at the end of Madison Street, and additional parking is available around the park and garages nearby.
Nearest Metro Station: King Street on Yellow/Blue Line
For more information on this event, please contact Katrina Foelsche (CLAS'99) at uvaservice@dchoos.org. Important note: please notify us at uvaservice@dchoos.org as soon as possible or cancel your Eventbrite registration if you sign up for an event and later find you cannot attend. Because these projects have specific requirements for volunteers, lack of attendance can greatly affect our ability to serve those in need.
Participants are also encouraged to join us for Activist Lit on Wednesday, April 21st where Nancy Stoner, President of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network, will join us to help moderate our conversation (see more information here).
This event will follow all pandemic-related health and safety regulations set in place by PRKN, the City of Alexandria, and the State of Virginia as of Saturday, April 24th. Please consult their respective websites for more information. Registrants will be notified of any changes to the event’s status via email from UVA Clubs.
