Utilizing the Ballot for Housing and Homelessness: Looking Beyond 2016 Election Results

  • Examine future possibilities for housing/homelessness action at the ballot based on 2016 outcomes at the local and state levels, as well as important lessons to learn for future political efforts.
  • What are the pitfalls and strengths of relying on the ballot to improve housing stability?
  • Will the public and voters have sufficient willingness to address housing on the ballot in the future? What is the public’s assessment and appetite for addressing these issues electorally?
  • How was messaging used in the 2016 election around housing-related ballot measures effective? Or did it miss the mark? How should future efforts communicate to the public about these issues?

Join us for a lunch-and-learn workshop session hosted by SCANPH and AIA LA to hear insights and analysis from expert speakers who will break down the larger implications of the 2016 election as it relates to housing-related ballot measures and political activity around these issues. This workshop will help you to understand key takeaways, and more importantly, significant impacts on the housing, development, and planning industries beyond the 2016 election.

The event's workshop setting will allow for questions, substantive conversation, and engaging dialogue about the results of your local, state, and national ballot.

Workshop speakers:
--Moderator: Josh Stephens, Editor, California Planning & Development Report
--Ann Sewill, Vice President, Housing and Economic Opportunity, CA Community Foundation
--Tommy Newman, Director of Public Affairs, LA Family Housing
--Molly Rysman, Housing and Homelessness Deputy, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl
--Cecilia Estolano,  Co-Founder, ELP Advisors

A catered lunch will be served at this workshop.
