Utilizing Social Media in the Classroom facilitated by Megan Bird.
Megan Bird is a self-professed Google Geek and has developed a passion for educational technology during her 18 years teaching everything from 1st through 8th grade in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. Megan has also taught adult education in technology, early childhood and curriculum and instruction for UOP for the past 12 years. She has a Bachelor's in Education from U of A and a Master's in Education from ASU. She is currently finishing her 2nd Master's in Educational Administration. Her awards include Arizona PTA Educator of the Year, KNIX Teacher of the Month, United Parent Council Teacher of Excellence and Distinguished Faculty from University of Phoenix. Megan has been involved in the implementation of a BYOD initiative and now teaches in a 3:1 environment. She has piloted Twitter as a teaching tool with her 5th and 6th graders as well as using other social media platforms in the classroom. As a teacher, Megan actively uses Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram for teaching and learning in the classroom.
This workshop introduces teachers and building administrators to effective and responsible social media implementation in K-12 classrooms. The emergence of social media as a viable tool for learning will be explored and implementation considerations will be determined. Legal and ethical issues regarding social media use in schools will be examined. Participants will devise a social media application plan for school-wide integration.
