Event description

Description

Teaching short computational skills workshops is a large part of the work of Research Computing Services, and in the past much of the actual in-class time available for the workshops has been taken up by the process of installing software on attendees' computers. There are almost always users with unique and difficult to debug problems which takes the instructors' and students' time and attention away from the material being presented.

To address this, RCS is developing a library of on-demand computing environments that can be launched in AWS via the CloudFormation service. Currently we have templates for SQL and R workshop environments that launch instances and create logins for workshop attendees, so all they need to do is connect (either via SSH or their browser, depending on the material) and begin to follow along. Environments for other topics (e.g. Python data science and visualization) will be added in the future.

In this session, Matthew Rich from Research Computing Services will detail their use and benefits of AWS CloudFormation to support workshops and training sessions.
