Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings pose one of the greatest threats to public safety, economic vitality, and community resilience in Utah. During earthquakes, these buildings—which were outlawed for new construction in Utah—have consistently been highly prone to damage, leaving occupants and pedestrians at risk to their crumbling parapets, walls, and floors. Along the Wasatch Front, there are more than 140,000 URM buildings, including homes, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, churches, and schools.

The good news is that the engineering needed to make these buildings safer is straightforward. Barriers remain to address the problem—lack of political will, competing demands for financing, limited public awareness, and uncertainty surrounding how to fund retrofits.

This summit will bring together government officials, emergency managers, civic organizations, and building professionals to share perspectives and discuss solutions. Space is limited, so those wanting to attend should register as soon as possible.

Topics include:

  • Seismic hazard along the Wasatch Fault
  • Risk URM buildings pose to communities in Utah
  • Experiences from recent earthquakes
  • Retrofit solutions and programs in Utah
  • Policy successes in Utah and elsewhere
  • Financing opportunities

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, anyone needing special accommodations (including auxiliary communication aids and services) should contact John Crofts at jcrofts@utah.gov or 801.560.2637 at least five working days before the Summit.
