This Desert Explorations course will be taught by Utah's Hogle Zoo educators, and will be based at the Education Building.  Class times are 9am-5pm starting Tuesday, June 12, and ending Friday, June 15.  The first two days of this field course will take place at Utah's Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City.  The second two days will include a trip to Moab to explore the deserts of southern Utah.  Utah's Hogle Zoo will provide transportation to and from Moab, leaving on Thursday morning and returning Friday evening.  Lodging is on your own, with several hotel and camping options in the area.  Email Suzanne Zgraggen at szgraggen@hoglezoo.org if you have questions about the course logistics.

You will be given access to the Desert Explorations online course one month before the start of this field course, and you will be required to complete the online course before attending the field course.

This is an adult education program that is open to participants 18 years of age and older.  Exceptions for teens as young as 15 may be made if a parent/guardian is also registering for the course.  Please email Mark Larese-Casanova at marklc@usu.edu if you would like to bring a child as young as 15.

Course Description
While many of the upland systems in Utah, such as the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert, vary in plant and animals communities, they all share common features- low precipitation resulting in arid or semi-arid deserts, relatively high elevation, and climatic extremes including hot summers and/or cold winters. As a result, the plants and animals of these areas possess extreme adaptations for survival.  Come join us while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed.  Class size is small in order to maximize your opportunities for learning and having fun!

Each Utah Master Naturalist course consists of 40 hours of instruction, with approximately 16 hours covered in the online course, and the remaining 24 hours spent outdoors in a field course.  Field course activities will include instructor-led discussions, guest presentations on relevant resource issues, small group activities, and open discussions.

Due to the nature of the Deserts class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain, often in rocky environments.  While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact Mark at marklc@usu.edu if you have any concerns.
