This Desert Explorations course is in partnership with Dead Horse Point State Park, and will be co-taught with park staff.  We will meet at the park on Monday, September 24, from 6-8pm, and then will spend Tuesday to Thursday, September 25-27, from about 9am-5pm together, with some evening activities. We will be camping at Dead Horse Point State Park during the course, and will use the park as our home base for exploring the area.  Previous camping experience is required, and we can help provide some equipment if you do not have your own.  Campsites are already reserved.

You will be given access to the Desert Explorations online course one month before the start of this field course, and you will be required to complete the online course before attending the field course.

This is an adult education program that is open to participants 18 years of age and older.  Exceptions for teens as young as 15 may be made if a parent/guardian is also registering for the course.  Please email Mark Larese-Casanova at marklc@usu.edu if you would like to bring a child as young as 15.

Course Description
While many of the upland systems in Utah, such as the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert, vary in plant and animals communities, they all share common features- low precipitation resulting in arid or semi-arid deserts, relatively high elevation, and climatic extremes including hot summers and/or cold winters. As a result, the plants and animals of these areas possess extreme adaptations for survival.  Come join us at Dead Horse Point State Park in the heart of the Colorado Plateau while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed.  Class size is small in order to maximize your opportunities for learning and having fun!

Each Utah Master Naturalist course consists of 40 hours of instruction, with approximately 16 hours covered in the online course, and the remaining 24 hours spent outdoors in a field course.  Field course activities will include instructor-led discussions, guest presentations on relevant resource issues, small group activities, and open discussions.

Due to the nature of the Deserts class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain, often in rocky environments.  While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact Mark at marklc@usu.edu if you have any concerns.
