The Utah Hay and Forage Symposium will be held February 5-7, 2019 at the Dixie Center in St. George, UT. The event is held every other year and is co-sponsored by USU Extension and Utah Farm Bureau. We have pulled together an excellent program that addresses a number of critical issues facing Utah hay and forage producers.

Program Highlights: Hands-on alfalfa diagnostic field trip. This workshop will be held February 5th, the day before the start of the symposium. Busses will take us from St. George to the Hardy farm in Logandale, NV. Participants will rotate through sessions on soil and forage sampling (Grant Cardon and Jody Gale), insects (Ricardo Ramirez), weeds and herbicides (Corey Ransom and Earl Creech), and soil moisture measurement (Matt Yost and Niel Allen). This workshop will be hands-on with an emphasis on diagnosing in-field problems. This will be an excellent educational opportunity for growers, crop consultants, and Extension agents. Lunch will be provided. Enrollment is limited to 110 participants, so please register early!

Symposium Speaker Highlights: There are 14 speakers and 2 panels on the agenda that will discuss a broad range of hay and forage production issues. Featured speakers include: • Ryan Larsen (USU Extension) will discuss Utah’s hay market outlook. • Tom Bailey (Bailey Farms Intl) will talk about hay export markets • Dan Putnam (University of California Davis) will review deficit irrigation strategies in alfalfa. • Glenn Shewmaker (University of Idaho) will address forage quality of reduced lignin alfalfa • A farmer panel will discuss strategies to improve forage profitability and production. • A seed industry panel will discuss new innovations among alfalfa seed companies • And many others. CEU’s will also be available for CCA’s and Utah pesticide applicators. For more information, contact Spencer Gibbons at 435-770-4590 or skg@xmission.com.
