Event description

Description

The Utah Bandmasters Association will have its 6th annual conference February 1st 2018. This is conveniently placed one day before the UMEA conference. This year our conference will again be held at the Hilton Garden Inn next to the Dixie Center where the UMEA Conference is held the next day. This year we are excited to present some more exciting clinics featuring Todd Campbell, Jermie Arnold, Matthew Arau and Randall Clark. And those interested in starting the day with a bit of Golf can join us on the links in the afternoon.

New fee structure: We feel it is important that UBA members are members of the National Band Association (NBA). To encourage NBA membership we will be charging Non NBA Members $80 for the conference. This is 55 (membership) and 25 (conference fee). So you can see if members join NBA their conference fee remains at $25, just like last year. Retired members can join NBA for $25. Almost half our UBA membership already are members of NBA. You can join NBA at https://nationalbandassociation.org/join/

Collegiate NBA Membership is $15. For current NBA members there will be a $25 conference fee, which includes a Jimmy John’s dinner. Please register online or make checks out to “Utah Bandmasters Association”. All applications and checks should be sent to John Miller.

What influences the culture in your band room? Drawing on positive psychology and real life experience, this session will provide tips and strategies to help your students flourish in a musical community filled with joy, respect, growth, purpose, meaning, and excellence.

8:30-9:15 – Randal Clark: Teaching Jazz Improvisation: Patterns for Success

Teaching jazz improvisation can be a daunting task, especially considering the number of kids in the jazz band class, and music that doesn’t lend itself well to creating an organized game plan for improving skills. In many instances jazz improvisation is the last thing we teach after the music is rehearsed. Many music educators are not experts in jazz improvisation and find themselves teaching students in generalities since they lack the specific knowledge of what to teach leaving students floundering to make sense of what they are supposed to do. This session will discuss the common faults that educators find themselves in when teaching jazz improvisation and provide a game plan to get students developing their improvisation the right way. You will learn exactly what is supposed to be played over specific chords and progressions in a methodical way that you can incorporate into regular rehearsals as well as a common-sense approach to improving student skills. Bring your instrument and you can join in the session!
