Event Details

Captain Triebel graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1964 and earned his pilot wings in January 1966.  He joined Fighter Squadron Two Hundred Thirteen (VF-213) on board the USS KITTY HAWK flying the F-4 Phantom, and made two 7-month combat deployments to Southeast Asia.

In 1969 he was assigned as an exchange pilot with the Air Force's 8th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Holloman AFB.  The squadron deployed to Germany in support of NATO, where he stood nuclear hot-pad alerts and trained with NATO forces throughout Europe.

He returned to Navy carrier aviation in 1970, joining Fighter Squadron 151 (VF-151) on board the USS MIDWAY.  In August 1972, during his fourth combat deployment, he was shot down over North Vietnam by surface-to-air missiles. He remained a POW until his release in March 1973.  He was subsequently awarded two Bronze Star Medals for, "extraordinary courage and resourcefulness in resisting enemy demands in an atmosphere of harassment, torture, and brutal treatment."

Captain Triebel continued his career, serving as commanding officer of a carrier based fighter squadron, and later as commander of the strategic Diego Garcia Support Facility in the Indian Ocean.  He served two tours in the Pentagon, first as a national security policy officer, and later as the Navy's Head, Western Hemisphere Plans and Policy Division.  In that capacity he worked on a range of security issues with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the State Department, various intelligence agencies.

He arrived at Duke University in 1987 as Commanding Officer of the Navy ROTC Unit.  In 1991 that position expanded to include the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University.  He then served as Chief of Staff at the U.S. Naval Academy, retiring from active duty in 1993.
