Description:
All of our clients have their own superhero inside of them! Our goal as mental health clinicians is to help them unlock their inner strengths! Often fictional superheroes & pop culture icons struggle with issues just like the rest of us - and overcome anger, loss, isolation and trauma. Using superheroes & mainstream media as the metaphor, this 2-day training will explore the psychology behind superheroes, analyze the latest research and will discuss how to use these metaphors in the counseling setting and in play therapy. We will cover evidence-based practices including: play therapy, ACT, CBT, bibliotherapy and more. We will establish how comic book narratives and a client’s love for a certain character can promote engagement to overcome depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, and maladaptive behaviors. We will also discuss strategies about helping clients distinguish between reality and fantasy play.

Learning objectives:
1) Introduce the history of superheroes and comic books, the Hero’s Journey and why superheroes appeal to adults, teens and children in play therapy.
2) Analyze the latest research on the use of the superhero metaphor in clinical practice and communicate the impact of this in mental health practice and play therapy.
3) Establish how a client’s passion for certain fictional characters can be used to identify strengths and promote engagement in the therapeutic process in play therapy & counseling.
4) Develop a framework for using evidence-based therapies including CBT, ACT, Positive Psychology, Play Therapy with superheroes, pop culture and comics.
5) Communicate how narratives from comic books & pop culture can be introduced by the therapist to create a safe psychological distance from trauma and help kids share their own traumatic experiences in play therapy.
6) The participant will have the opportunity to discuss strategies to help clients distinguish between reality and fantasy play in the playroom.
7) Participants of this workshop will examine the presenting diagnostic symptoms of the client, review examples of cases and identify superhero-themed play therapy interventions to be utilized specifically for certain diagnoses.
8) The participants will review case conceptualizations, treatment plans and interventions us ing popular-culture references such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Disney and Anime/Manga in play therapy and counseling.
9) Participants will be introduced to cultural diversity in comics and pop culture and discuss how a client's own culture or ethnicity can help self-esteem, self-compassion and self-identify in play therapy.
