Description

Using Play Therapy to Build Resilience in Children of Divorce

Taught by Jamie Lynn Langley, LCSW, RPT-S

Growing numbers of children are impacted by parental divorce and separation, with changes that may bring about emotional and behavioral concerns. Divorce has been understood by mental health clinicians to be a type of loss where the child may actually grieve the loss of the parental marriage or relationship. More recent research has indicated that divorce is also a source of toxic stress for children, also identified as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) and as such can have long-term impacts into adulthood. Parents will often seek assistance to help their children better adjust to these changes, but children may be unable or resistant to talk about such troubling events. Play Therapy is often used as a modality to be able to assist the child in working through this resistance or inability by meeting the child in their natural realm of play. As part of this play therapy process, therapists may incorporate activities and games to approach divorce in a playful yet intentional manner to foster healing. These play therapy interventions can be adapted to include resilience-building components warranted by the extended potential ramifications of divorce.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how to establish and maintain the role of play therapist for the child-client in divorce cases.

2. Define what resiliency is and explain the rationale for inclusion in play therapy treatment for children of divorce.

3. Cite the 7 Cs of Resiliency and how these can be incorporated in play therapy interventions.

4. Identify at least three play therapy interventions that can be used in treatment with children of divorce.
