Event description

Description

Workshop in Whitehorse, Yukon on November 19-20

Environmental impact assessment—like all technical writing—constantly uses reasoning to reach conclusions. That process is called ‘argument’, which means to assemble a series of reasons, leading to conclusions, targeted for a specific audience.. This workshop shares two sets of tools collectively called ‘Organized Reasoning’. The first provides principles for creating clearer arguments relevant to phases of the EA process. The second shows how to better present arguments in the written text of your documents. Assessments are complex documents and using the tools of argument can make them easier for audiences to understand. And easier for authors to write!

The workshop shows how EA documents contain common errors in their arguments and weaknesses in their writing. Participants will assemble evidence and reasoning for several different kinds of argument found in EAs. We practice steps, and introduce computer-based tools, that show how to bring improved arguments into technical report writing. We discuss how people have implemented these steps in their EA practice. Participants learn a revised approach to planning, preparing and writing technical material that they can use immediately on the job to write stronger cases in their EAs. The workshop includes opportunities for discussion and practice and provides breaks for refreshment. You’ll receive a handout documenting the main ideas. Lunch is not provided but is available nearby. Participants will be limited to 16 people.

The workshop is two days in length and is being offerred November 19-20.
