ocus : Using Models, Critique and Descriptive Feedback to improve writing

Whole Group:

v Modeling a critique lesson on a draft to name qualities of strength and areas for improvement ( Interesting vs. Important and its’ impact on writing- Partner Sentences)

v Modeling how feedback can be provided to a writer ( whole class/ conference etc.) that is descriptive and will result in improved technique

v Demonstration of a revision lesson : Based on feedback , model a revision lesson

v Management of Revision lessons in a writing classroom

Breakout Sessions: Teachers work to plan and enact revision lessons based on their students’ current writing samples. (Teachers name at least 2 ways or strategies that would address observed needs )

BTP: TBD

Preparation:

  • Three recent samples of student writing that represent either:

a) Whole group need

b) Outliers ( high/low)

  • Read Chapter 3: Beyond the Grecian Urn: The Teacher as a Writing Model

Chapter 4: Evaluating Student Writing: Using Real-World Models

in Teaching Adolescent Writers
