DIY Girls' mission is to increase girls' interest and success in technology, engineering and making through innovative educational experiences and mentor relationships. DIY Girls' after-school and summer programs offer hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) experiences, providing a supportive community for girls driven by an interest in creating and building with technology. Since 2012, DIY Girls has helped over 1200 girls in Los Angeles learn and apply technical skills by creating their own projects and inventions.
In October 2016, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed Luz to serve as commissioner of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works. While serving on the executive team that oversees the design, construction, renovation and operation of public projects, she continues to be an adviser for DIY Girls to facilitate more city-wide STEM initiatives. Luz earned a bachelor's in electrical engineering from MIT and a master's in technology in education from Harvard.
Lunch will be provided to registered attendees.
