Description

U.S. Manufacturing and Healthcare: Leading with 5G

A 5G Technology and Policy Workshop

High-speed mobile broadband networks are being deployed across the U.S., creating transformative opportunities to all parts of the U.S. economy. Two sectors in particular will benefit from the increased capacity, high reliability, and minimal latency that 5G networks offer: digital manufacturing and the provision of state-of-the-art healthcare. Join the Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy for its sixth annual wireless technology and policy seminar to learn more about how 5G networks will enable new methods of care delivery while also bringing new digital manufacturing jobs to areas across the country. Experts will talk in detail about how 5G differs from previous generations of wireless technologies and the network characteristics most beneficial to manufacturers and health care providers. The speakers will also explore:

  • How 5G will enable new systems and methods of care delivery;

  • Why mission-critical, ultra-reliable, low-latency communication networks are essential for remote and robotic surgery;

  • The advantages 5G will bring to telemedicine, especially in rural areas;

  • Meeting medical and research facilities’ bandwidth needs through access to new mid-band and mmWave spectrum, software-defined networking and network function virtualization;

  • The scenarios in which 5G and AI will synergistically make healthcare more efficient;

  • Producing a more efficient manufacturing process and more closely linking customers, suppliers, and manufacturers through artificial intelligence, data analytics, and real time machine learning;

  • The potential of augmented reality to help mitigate the cost of equipment breakdowns and reduce production downtime;

  • The application of 5G network slicing to create unique, industry-specific functionalities in combination with cloud-based platforms that enable design, production, sales, and distribution;

  • What policymakers can do to support the U.S. manufacturing base in making the transition to the smart-manufacturing era of tomorrow, as well as making healthcare more efficient.

Preliminary Agenda:

  • 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. - Registration

  • 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. - Panel Discussion on 5G Technology (5G standardization and deployment; 5G features for healthcare and manufacturing; role of artificial intelligence and synergies with 5G)

  • 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Panel Discussion on 5G Public Policy (spectrum pipeline; U.S. competitiveness; network investment; other topics to be defined)

Speakers will be announced soon.
