Just a day after the polls close, join The Wall Street Journal’s editors for an insightful discussion about the results of the 2016 election and what they mean for U.S. foreign policy, U.S.-Japan relations and the global economy.

About the Speakers:

Ichita Yamamoto
Chairman of the Budget Committee, House of Councilors
Chairman of LDP Committee on Promoting Strategy for Cool-Japan

Former Minister of the Cabinet Office in the 2nd Abe Administration; in charge of Science and Technology, Space Policy, Ocean Policy and Territorial Integrity, Information Technology Policy, Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs.

After serving as Minister, Mr. Yamamoto was appointed as Special Advisor to the President of LDP (PM Abe) on IT Strategy. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Chuo University's Department of Law and a Master's Degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.
He has worked for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the UN Development Program HQ in New York. He was first elected to the House of Councilors in 1995 and has won 4 elections by overwhelming majority of valid ballots since then. Before being appointed as Minister, he served as Parliamentary Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of Foreign and Defense Affairs Committee of House of Councilors, Chairman of Policy Council of the LDP.
His political blog is widely read among political circles and journalists. It is often quoted in major news articles and TV programs. His live web video channel is the most viewed program at Nico Nico Douga, Japan’s equivalent of Youtube, in the political genre. He is a passionate music composer and singer with 6 album released under his name, and an avid skier.

山本 一太


Akihisa Nagashima
Member of the House of Representatives with The Democratic Party (DP)

Akihisa Nagashima is a fifth-term member of the House of Representatives with The Democratic Party (DP). He currently serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education, Sports, Science and Technology, and the member of the House Special Committee on Promotion of Science and Technology, and Innovation.

He has also been teaching public policy at the Chuo University Graduate School as a Visiting Professor since 2002. He previously served as Senior Vice Minister of Defense in the Noda Cabinet in 2012. He also served as Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda for Foreign Affairs and National Security in 2011-12, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense in the Hatoyama and the following Kan Cabinets in 2009-10.

長島 昭久

衆議院議員5期目。東京都第21区(立川市・昭島市・日野市)選出。 1962年2月17日生まれ。慶應義塾大学法学研究科修士課程修了(憲法学)。米国ジョンズ・ホプキンス大学高等国際問題研究大学院(SAIS)修士課程修了後は、米国外交問題評議会(CFR)で日本人初の上席研究員を務めた。 2003年に衆議院議員初当選以来、5期連続当選。2009年、自民党から民主党 (現・民進党)への政権交代に伴い、鳩山・菅政権の下で防衛大臣政務官を務め、野田政権では総理大臣補佐官(外交・安全保障担当)、防衛副大臣を歴任。2013年に研究・政治活動の集大成として『「活米」という流儀-外交・安全保障のリアリズム』(講談社)を上梓。 現在は、衆議院文部科学委員会筆頭理事、科学技術・イノベーション推進特別委員会委員。 他に日本スケート連盟副会長、中央大学大学院公共政策研究科 客員教授などを務める。

Peter Landers
Tokyo bureau chief, The Wall Street Journal

Peter joined The Wall Street Journal as a Tokyo correspondent in 1999 after working in Tokyo for the Associated Press and the Far Eastern Economic Review. He moved to New York in 2002 and served in several editing posts including as a page-one staff editor before becoming assistant bureau chief in Washington in 2008. He assumed his present post in February 2014. Peter is a graduate of Yale. He serves as a guest commentator on the TBS Saturday evening program "ShinJoho7days Newscaster."



ニューヨーク生まれアメリカ出身。1990年エール大学卒(専攻:東アジア研究)。AP通信東京支局記者、ファー・イースタン・エコノミック・レビュー誌の東京支局長を経て、1999年ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル入社。東京特派員、本社一面部デスク、ワシントン支局次長などを務める。2014年2月から現職。TBS「新情報7days ニュースキャスター」のゲストコメンテーター。

George Nishiyama

Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal Japan

George Nishiyama is Managing Editor, responsible for overseeing The Wall Street Journal Japan (JWSJ) and Dow Jones’ Japanese Language Service (JLS) for institutional clients. George joined The Journal’s Tokyo bureau in 2011 as an editor in charge of economic policy coverage. Leading a team of reporters, he has been covering Abenomics from its launch, including the initial success of the Bank of Japan’s drastic easing measures and the struggle it is now facing amid an economic slowdown. More recently, he traded time with bureaucrats and politicians for time with a high-school baseball pitcher in a rural town for a feature on his challenge at making it to the pros. George grew up in the U.S. and in Japan, and prior to The Journal, spent 18 years at Reuters, where he last managed its Japanese website as Deputy Editor.
