About this event

The Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR) is excited to host a book launch for the newly released book, Gender and International Criminal Law (Oxford University Press, 2022). In this panel, the books three editors, Indira Rosenthal, Valerie Oosterveld, and Susana SáCouto will examine the role of gender in international criminal law (ICL) and discuss the key gaps in the understanding of gender within ICL. This panel will be moderated by Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the book's editors.

This event will be in person for the Cardozo community and will be online via zoom for the public.

About the book

Gender and International Criminal Law

The last few decades have seen remarkable developments in international criminal justice, especially in relation to the pursuit of individuals responsible for sexual violence and other gender-based crimes. Historically ignored, justified, or minimized, this category of crimes now has a heightened profile in the international political and judicial arena. Despite this, gender is poorly understood, and blind spots, biases, and stereotypes prevail.

Responding to that challenge, this book brings together leading feminist international criminal and humanitarian law academics and practitioners to examine the place of gender in international criminal law (ICL).
