URBAN STREAM RESTORATION & AWARENESS CONFERENCE

Saturday, October 12th, 2013

8:00 am – 4:00 pm

 U.S. Representative Hank Johnson &

 State Representative Tonya P. Anderson

POSITION: The South River and the Yellow River are two of the major waterways in the region. The South River begins just north of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and flows north before turning southeast traversing through the City of Atlanta and DeKalb and Rockdale Counties before ending in Jackson Lake.  The Yellow River traverses north to south from Gwinnet County, into the eastern portion of DeKalb and onwards through Rockdale County.

Over the years there has been increasing efforts to not only improve the quality of these urban rivers, but to explore initiatives that would create opportunities for additional recreation and economic development.

There are several public and private organizations, along with community groups who have studied and monitored these rivers. The South River Alliance, the Upper Ocmulgee Research Conservation & Development Council (RC&D), River Keeps, the Upper Ocmulgee Basin Advisory Council and several county governments which the rivers traverse through or are adjacent too.

OBJECTIVE: This program would be designed to engage both public and private organizations, private citizens and youth groups who have a desire to participate in the improvement and maintenance of these two multi-jurisdictional urban rivers. The conference would be a one day event from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm that centers on a series of sessions emphasizing water physical and biological issues. The morning will begin with a choice of breakout sessions. After a break for lunch there will be an additional breakout sessions offered including an additional Georgia Adopt-a-Stream workshop.

MISCELLANEOUS: Free to the public. Prior registration required. Limited seating. Adopt-A-Stream workshop attendees would receive a Georgia Adopt-a-Stream Volunteer Monitoring Certification after workshop completion.
