Event description

Description

Join the original urban sketcher, Seattle-based artist and journalist Gabi Campanario, for a weekend of learning and exploration in Friedrichstadt, a picturesque small city of canals and Dutch-style architecture sometimes referred to as Germany’s “Little Amsterdam.”

This event consists of three drawing workshops themed around key urban sketching topics: architecture, people and nature. Campanario will demonstrate how he approaches each subject and guide participants through exercises in different techniques, including pencil, ink and watercolor.

Participants can register for as many workshops as they’d like, but space in each workshop is limited to 12 people to ensure a good learning experience for everyone. Each three-hour workshop costs €100. An open sketchwalk on Sunday afternoon is free for anyone to attend.

Friedrichstadt is located about a 90-minute drive from Hamburg and an hour from the border with Denmark. Average train travel time from Hamburg is less than two hours.

Schedule (sign up for one, two or all three workshops; registration for the free sketchwalk is suggested)

Saturday, 20 July

  • Architecture Sketching Workshop (Saturday, 20 July, 10:00-13:00; €100) The stepped-gable facades of the old Dutch-style homes along Friedrichstadt's canals provide an excellent opportunity to learn fundamentals of architectural sketching. Working from the general to the specific, participants will learn how to draw buildings that look as solid and accurate on paper as they do in real life.
  • People Sketching Workshop (Saturday, 20 July, 15:00-18:00; €100) People don’t stand still for urban sketchers to draw them. It’s our job to figure out how to capture their movement and expressions. In this workshop, we will practice gestural drawing as we document the scene at Market Square, where restaurants and coffee shops are the most lively this time of the year.

Sunday, 21 July

  • Nature Sketching Workshop (Sunday, 21 July, 10:00-13:00; €100) The relaxing green spaces and waterscapes around Friedrichstadt’s canals will be our playground during this workshop. Expect to work with your watercolors to capture organic shapes, water reflections and interesting textures.
  • Open Sketchwalk, Market Square (Sunday, 21 July, 14:00-16:00; free)

Meeting locations for each workshop will be provided to participants via email after registration.

Learning goals

  • Develop skills to approach a variety of common urban sketching subjects

  • Learn to work from the general to the specific to achieve sketches that capture a sense of place without unwanted distortion

  • Learn basic urban sketching techniques in pencil, ink and watercolor

Campanario, a Spanish-born artist best known as the founder of Urban Sketchers, promotes drawing on location and on the go, as a way to engage with your hometown and the places you visit. In his workshops, he emphasizes an incremental learning method, starting with composition and line and gradually developing an eye for tonal values and color. The sessions are especially aimed to drawing enthusiasts interested in documenting the world around them, as well as professionals in creative fields who want to reconnect with the practice of observational sketching as a fun and rewarding pastime.

Campanario is fond of drawing on small sketchbooks, but workshop participants are welcome to bring any of their favorite sketching tools. Here’s a recommended list:

  • Sketchbook: A Stillman & Birn sketchbook is included in the price of registration.

  • Ballpoint pen: Bic Cristal or any other brand

  • Pencil: A regular HB pencil would do, but you may also bring a pencil with a hard lead (i.e., 4H) and another with a soft lead (i.e., 3B)

  • Portable watercolor kit
