Event description

Description

Together we will explore new methods of bringing physical design closer to human perception and intent. Along the way, we'll discuss new pathways and possibilities in design where digital tools can be used as a means to an end and not as means in themselves across fields and disciplines of design, architecture, engineering, and art. Lead by Nassia Inglessis, designer of Urban Imprint, and Dan Howarth, Supervising Editor at A/D/O.

Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk set to begin promply at 7:00pm.

This talk is part of a series of events celebrating URBAN IMPRINT, a site-specific installation by Studio INI at A/D/O.

FROM THE ARTIST:

When you walk into URBAN IMPRINT, you become a part of the analog engineering by using your steps and weight to create a change in the environment. Although each part was created through digital methods such as laser and waterjet cutting, the role of digital ends there. As the material, in its new form, operates without the need of digital infrastructure. This is when digital tools and computational capacity are not used as an end in themselves but as a means to an end. Through computational design and digital fabrication tools, materials that have been otherwise considered static such as steel or glass, can be combined, reformed into dynamic systems employing traditional mechanics and innovative matter.

ABOUT URBAN IMPRINT:

In our urban environments, space is constructed through static boundaries, definitive forms and unmovable walls that individuals inhabit. In this static plan and unresponsive landscape, the presence of our self is often muted instead of being amplified and celebrated in its individuality.

In nature, the human self is both part of an ecosystem and an architect of the constructed space. This natural space is inclusive of the human self and evokes a sense of belonging. This raises the question: what constitutes a new type of urbanism that offers a natural environment in which the mind and body can both be present?

With Urban Imprint, we ask visitors to immerse themselves in a human-actuated installation. In this way, we hope to inspire the notion of a self that is fulfilled, empowered and energized by being present in the physical realm that she or he directly constructs.
