Urban Ecology for Community Engagement
Event Information
Description
Join us as bird ecologist Eric Fishel talks about his research and associated world adventures!
As an Open Society Institute Baltimore Community Fellow, Eric's project, Baltimore Foodparks, is looking for innovative ways to engage people with their local ecosystems to improve underserved urban neighborhoods. Can we engage a community through the study of birds? Will it help people to see vacant land in a new way-as potential green space?
Eric engages communities through up close and personal research. With Local community members, he will band and collect samples in support of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's effort to get bird demographic data from urban areas. Ultimately, this community engagement will be leveraged into vacant lot conversions. Upgrades that create food garden green spaces with healthy ecologies will better support wildlife, and, in turn, provide a healthier and cleaner environment for the citizenry of Baltimore.
Baltimore Foodparks is a program of Fusion Partnerships Inc.
