Arizona State University’s Urban Climate Research Center invites you to join them for their inaugural Anthony J. Brazel Urban Climate Lecture Series featuring renowned researcher Sue Grimmond.
Sue Grimmond, professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences with the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, is a leader in the field of urban climatology. She is well known for her extensive research in the fields of micrometeorology and hydroclimatology. She is a past president of the International Association of Urban Climate and past lead expert for the World Meteorological Organization on Urban and Building Climatology. In 2006, she was elected fellow of the American Meteorological Society. She was the 2009 recipient of both the Helmut E. Landsberg Award from the American Meteorological Society and the Luke Howard Award from the International Association for Urban Climate.
Her upcoming lecture, “Integrated Services for Weather and Climate in the Urban Environment,” will discuss how rapid urbanization, when combined with extreme climatic conditions, is leading to cities being the epicenter for high-impact weather events. These climatic events therefore have a greater economic impact, and can create a domino effect impacting other communities due to a breakdown of infrastructure. Grimmond’s talk will provide an overview of recent research in urban hydrometeorology and climatology that has taken place to meet the special needs of cities to face these climatic events.
