Urban Camp-Out Memphis

Why An Urban Camp-Out?
Inspiration for this event came from the event coordinator’s desire to expose Urban and At-Risk Children to the beauty of nature. He grew up in Memphis but spent summers in Brownsville, Tennessee and Mercer, Tennessee. He found that the time spent in rural Tennessee provided him with a much needed break from the social ills which persist in urban areas. He was never able to join a Scout Pack or Scout Troop, so he is using his influence as an adult to break the cycle of natural fear and natural ignorance which is prevalent among Urban youth.
Our goal is to expose inner-city youth ages 6 to 16 years of age to the concept and excitement of camping/outdoor living. We will achieve this goal by pairing first-time campers with more experienced campers. We have campers ready to offer the inexperienced participants a brief orientation to the outdoors with small classes/discussions about nature and outdoor living/survival. The experienced campers will spend the night with the first-time campers and offer a wealth of information to them. Not only will this be a learning experience, it will also be a time for participants to forge new relationships which we hope will have a positive impact on our society.
We understand that exposure to new concepts can be frustrating; therefore, we will reduce the frustration by enlisting the assistance of local Cub, Boys, and Girl Scout groups. It is our hope to generate enough interest from participants that they join a local Scout group and become outdoor enthusiast.
This overnight camping event will happen 2 times per year (March and July).
Boys camp-out in March and Girls camp-out in July.
