The Uptown Jazz Tentet is a New York City based, 10-piece jazz ensemble, collaboratively led by trumpeter Brandon Lee and trombonists Willie Applewhite & James Burton III. Since its inception in 2016, UJT has recorded two albums, There It Is (2017) and What’s Next (2020) which both received stellar reviews and high rankings in the jazz charts. UJT has also performed in many notable jazz venues in the NYC area, including Dizzy’s Club, the Iridium and Smalls Jazz Club, to name a few.

The initial concept of UJT was developed in 2015 by Willie Applewhite. "The goal was simple. Hire my friends to create the best music we can." Applewhite continues, "I wanted the focus to be only on the music, eliminating the trappings of individual ambition and politics.” The other main reason for forming UJT was to put together a group that is comprised of the most sought-after “sidemen” musicians on the jazz scene. In the words of Brandon Lee, "We all have bonded playing in the Grammy award-winning bands of Christian McBride, Ron Carter, Al Foster, Count Basie Orchestra, The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, etc... and we love our gigs! This is our opportunity to do our own thing."

UJT, while respecting the tradition, has its own unique sound and fresh approach that helps create an environment for creativity and expression within the music. Although most of the ensemble members are contributing writers, the co-leaders provide much of the compositional backbone. The compositions and arrangements go from small to large orchestrations, traditional to modern styles, featuring every individual equally in the ensemble. "Between us, there is a commonality of shared influences and experiences." Burton adds, “What's interesting is that this commonality is filtered through three unique lenses of interpretation. We all have a personalized compositional sound, but it all complements each other."
