Description

RDA cataloging for the school and public library cataloger.

A two-day course that will discuss on day one the foundational basis for the new cataloging rules in Resource Description and Access (RDA) and will focus on changes for cataloging of monographs, including cataloging with copy and discussion/demonstration of importance of authority work. Day two will focus on other popular formats in the school and public library—sound recordings, moving images, printed music, printed maps, digital resources and serials/integrating resources. The course will consist of power point slides, discussion and practical application by completing cataloging worksheets to create bibliographic records as well as authorities records of resources in various formats.

Learning outcomes:

--familiarization of FRBR model

--basic understanding of entity-relationship databases

--basic knowledge of new principles included in RDA, how these differ from AACR2, and how to apply this knowledge to monograph cataloging

--revising of cataloging copy to include RDA elements

--basic understanding of RDA elements in authority work and why this is important

--knowledge of how to format these new elements in MARC21

Take aways:

Each participant will leave the course with a workbook with examples to assist in day-to-day cataloging.
