Some of the most intriguing stories isn't in the history books! "Untold Stories" is an after school history story and activity session for students in grades 3-5 featuring lesser known real stories of fascinating people, places, and events in the Pejepscot region (Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell). First Thursdays from 3:45-5:15PM in February, March, April, and May. Topics:
February 6: Phebe Jacobs & Brunswick's Early African American Community. Phebe was born a slave in 1785 but arrived in Maine in 1820 a free woman. Learn what we know about her amazing story. Activity: Sharing someone else's story
March 5: Happy 200th Birthday, Maine! Learn why Maine became a state in 1820 and why it took several tries to break away from Massachusetts. Activity: Saving history in a scrapbook
April 2: An Olympic Track Team Trains in Brunswick. Seven American athletes would go on to break records at the 1972 Olympics after training at Bowdoin College. How did they do it? Activity: Goal-setting and running races (Note: This session meets at the Brunswick Recreation Center, 220 Neptune Drive, Brunswick Landing.)
May 7: Old-time Gardents & Outdoor Fun. The garden behind the History Center once provided a local family with fruit and flowers, exercise, and a place to hang laundry. Learn more about green spaces of times past. Activity: Planting and pot decorating
