Event description
An After School History and Craft Program for Grades 3-5

About this event

Some of the most intriguing stories aren't in the history books! Little known stories of people, places, and events in Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell history are the highlight of this story-and-activity session for area elementary students. Healthy snacks provided upon arrival (3:30-3:45). All sessions are taught by Carol Masterson, an educator and artist. Limited to 15 students each session. Grades 3-5 only.

October 7: Tools of the Trade: The Historic Craftperson's Toolbox

Discover some of the tools used by carpenters, furniture makers, craftspeople, and others from the past. You’ll see and be able to handle some tools that look familiar–you might have modern versions in your own home–but others will look very strange. What are they? Learn stories about how they were used and who used them, and then do a simple carpentry activity of your own!

November 4: Making an Appearance: Hairs, Hats, and Personal Adornment

What does a person’s hair, head-wear, and other personal decoration say about them? Examine several kinds of hats, hair decorations, and images of hairstyles from the past to see how people expressed themselves. You’ll see some unusual (for today) styles for all kinds of people, and have a chance to talk about your own favorite hairstyles and hear-wear. Bring along a favorite hat to share, and make a special one to take home!

December 2: On the Face of It: The Art & Craft of Silhouettes

Just in time for the holidays–make a present for a loved one of your own silhouetted image! Silhouettes were an extremely popular form of capturing someone’s portrait in the years before photography. Learn about the techniques of capturing someone’s silhouette, who did and didn’t make them, and what people did with silhouettes. We’ll share some silhouettes from our collection and talk about the people captured in them.
