This Month: A Quick and Dirty History of LGBTQ Rights with Catherine Clune-Taylor

Catherine will take us through a quick and dirty history of LGBTQ Rights in America, juxtaposing the big moments that most people know (Stonewall! The depathologization of Homosexuality! Ellen! Gay Marriage!), with a couple of lesser known facts from queer history in the US. Like that time Thomas Jefferson tried to introduce a law reducing the punishment for sodomy from death to castration (Virginia said no!). Or that time Franklin Roosevelt okay’d an internal investigation into “homosexual contact” in the Navy, in which young, hot sailors were ordered –as part of an elaborate sting operation – to have sex with as many other young, hot sailors as they could.

Catherine Clune-Taylor is a feminist philosopher, a writer, an activist, and an educator. She’s currently a researcher at Princeton University where she does research on the intersection between science and medicine, and different systems of oppression like race, class, gender and sexuality. She also – apparently – teaches the kind of strange courses that turn students into “leftist snowflakes” (or, at least, that’s what FoxNews said about her last year). She’s still trying to figure out what section that goes under on her CV.

Matthew Starr is a comedian who has been featured on Above Average, CollegeHumor, and AV Club. He is very excited to be hosting this show at Caveat!

Monique Moses is a Canadian born Carribean bred comedian based in Brooklyn. She’s been featured on Above Average, Refinery 29‘s Riot and Funny or Die, and has created content for Comedy Central and IFC Comedy Cribs.
