Description

Summary: The purpose of this session is to provide information about the unique experiences and challenges faced by members of the United States armed forces as they transition into the civilian workplace. Topics such as recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention will be covered. Participants will be encouraged to discuss their own experience working with veterans. After completing the session, participants will have a better understanding of the challenges veterans face and their role in mitigating those challenges.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify unique experiences of military members compared to civilian peers and discuss how these affect future employment.

  2. Discuss various steps of the employment process (i.e., recruitment, selection, onboarding, retention) and the barriers that veterans face at each of these steps.

  3. Develop solutions to mitigate barriers to employment for veteran applicants.

Biography: Dr. Christopher Stone earned his MBA and Ph.D. with an emphasis in organizational behavior and human resource management from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He specializes is employment barriers faced by disadvantaged populations including veterans and individuals with disabilities. Dr. Stone has published peer reviewed articles on stereotypes of veterans and has presented his work on veteran employment at multiple conferences including Society of Industrial and Organitional Psychology, Academy of Management, and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies. Dr. Stone currently serves as Assistant Professor of Management at Emporia State University.
