Event description

Description

On Saturday, September 29th in Atlanta, Georgia, formerly incarcerated people and their families share stories of resilience and healing.

Currently, Georgia ranks #1 in the country for the number of persons under supervision by the criminal justice system. Most of the individuals incarcerated are poor and/or people of color. Of those, 54% of men in jail/prison are head of household, and 52% of incarcerated women are head of household. 1 in 28 American children have a parent in prison or jail. That is 2.7 million children. Not surprisingly, the communities from which these individuals come suffer tremendously.

Unshackled Narratives: The Impact of Incarceration will use the City of Atlanta and its communities as the lens through which we explore, discuss, and bring into focus issues related to incarceration in Atlanta and in the country.

Join us for an interactive storytelling experience amplifying the voices of formerly incarcerated people and their families in Atlanta, Georgia. This workshop is designed to bring community stakeholders together to develop strategies for criminal justice reform in Atlanta. Through storytelling, dialogue, and community visioning we will imagine a future beyond collateral consequences.

The first part of this two-part event kicks off with an evening screening on Wednesday, September 26th at 6:30PM of RIKERS: An American Jail and a post-screening panel discussion with Cadeem Gibbs, who is featured in the film.
