Unraveling the Mysteries of Ancient Puppetry in India/Karnataka,

A Lecture Demonstration

Anupama Hoskere is a Master Puppeteer of Classical Puppetry of India. Following a brief discussion of the origins of puppet theater in ancient India, she will lead viewers through a journey of her own experimentation and explorations that resulted in the revival of this beautiful art form. The talk will be supported by video clippings from her 20 plus live-stage productions of tales from the Indian epics and literary masterpieces. Her productions have combined classical Indian dance with the use of puppetry.

Anupama was trained in classical Indian Bharatanatyam by Late Guru Smt. Narmada and in the Art of Puppetry by Guru M.R. Ranganatha Rao. She is the director of Dhaatu Puppet theatre www.dhaatu.org and on the Advisory Board of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi (Puppetry Cell). She has been a TEDx speaker at the GITAM University,Vizag, has presented at the Musee Guimet, Paris, Cedar African Theater Festival, Morocco, the 1st International Puppet Festival, Nanchong, China, and the International Puppet Festival Samara, Russia, amongst others. Anupama has taught courses in Traditional Indian Puppetry at European Universities and in India. These include workshops at NID, Bangalore and a course at Azim Premji University.

The Presentation will include a brief, live puppet dance demonstration.
