Event Details

School gardening, hands-on cooking, food justice education, health literacy - by any name nutrition education is more important than ever for students' health, academic achievement, and development as 21st century citizens. All New York City students should have access to great nutrition education. Yet nearly half of our schools lack programming from one of the 40+ organizations offering nutrition education to city schools, according to the recent “A is for Apple” report from the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, Program in Nutrition, Teachers College Columbia University.

CFF, along with Philanthropy New York and their Health Working Group, invites you to a conversation about the current status of nutrition education programs (NEPs) in NYC schools, as well as the characteristics, distribution, and policy context in which they operate. How can the funding community best leverage its resources and influence to achieve greater equity in nutrition education so that all students have access to these opportunities?

Topics will include:

  • Key findings and recommendations from the “A is for Apple” report
  • Funders’ perspectives and innovative approaches to support nutrition education
  • Strategies for philanthropy to elevate and strengthen school-based nutrition education through collaboration, cooperation, and investment.

Speakers:

  • Bronwyn Starr, MPH, Program Officer, New York State Health Foundation (moderator)
  • Kelly Giordano, Managing Director, Newman’s Own Foundation
  • Dr. Pamela Koch, Executive Director and Research Associate Professor, Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, Program in Nutrition, Teachers College, Columbia University
  • NYC nutrition education representative TBD
