The History of Skate-a-thon for Parkinson's

Upon her own diagnosis at the age of 52, Colleen Wuebben founded the PHD (Parkinson's Health Development) program to help increase the availability and accessibility of specialized exercise classes for people with Parkinson's in Omaha. She and her husband Ted flooded their own backyard in 2008 to host the very first Skate-a-thon to raise funds to support Colleen's dream. The twenty-four-hour, outdoor ice skating event was a hit, and quickly grew in popularity! In 2010 the Skate-a-thon outgrew the Wuebben family's backyard and the PHD partnered with UNMC to host the first, UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson's, which raised money for the research being done at UNMC and for the Parkinson's services. Colleen passed away in 2013, but her legacy continues with this epic event. Since her death, the PHD program has changed its name to Parkinson's Nebraska and has expanded its mission to be a primary resource for Parkinson's disease information, educational programs, exercise classes, and support to all Nebraskans touched by Parkinson's disease, and her family (her 5 children and Ted of course!) continue to honor her memory with the Skate-a-thon. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the very first Skate-a-thon. We invite you to join us to support local Parkinson's disease research and services, and to make this event a family tradition of your own!
