Event description

Description

You are probably addressing disruption, digitalisation and innovation in your daily business, but without high psychological safety it is a wasted effort!

In our work with teams the first thing we do - we ask team members two questions; “When do you feel the best?” and “When do you perform the best?” Responses are different but they all lead to the same conclusion – we feel and perform the best when we feel safe to raise our voice, put forward an argument, disagree, admit failures and fears without fearing being judged, punished, excluded, embarrassed or even loose our job. This phenomenon scientists call psychological safety – feeling safe for interpersonal risk-taking.

The term "psychological safety" is not new - Edgar Schein and Warren Bennis used it for the first time in the year 1965 in the statement "...without psychological safety changes in the enterprise are not possible". Other renowned scientists, such as William Kahn and Amy Edmondson, found that psychological safety greatly influences the creativity, innovation and engagement of people and teams. Google's Project Aristotle study published in 2015 rated psychological safety as the key success factor for team effectiveness at Google.

Even though the role of psychological safety among academics is well researched and understood the majority of organisations and leaders know little or nothing, our research shows that less than 20% of leaders are fully aware of implications on low psychological safety in teams and organisations, and less than 10% of leaders actively engage in practices to increase and maintain their team’s psychological safety. Our research also shows that on average every 3rd team in large organisation shows evidence of low psychological safety. One could argue that vast amount of resources organisations spent on innovation, digitalisation and change are wasted!!!

“In teams and organisations with low psychological safety, people are literally paralyzed – they become reactive, they have very low work engagement, they withdraw from activities leading to creativity and innovation, they are often sick and resistant to change - they become disablers of success”. - Lilia Knauer, Co-Founder & Subject Expert.
