Event description

Description

Come along and learn how to paint with Fiona Thomas.

This will be a fun and safe space to let your inner creative come out.

By the end of the workshop you will have one painting to take home with you - either a finished piece, or one you can add some more touches to in your own time.

All you need is an open mind and a willingness to learn from Fiona who is the Joint People's Choice winner for painting 'Primal' in her last joint exhibition Beginnings.

Currently a part-time tutor at the Learning Connexion and the Women's Centre in Upper Hutt, you now get to experience her warm and friendly teaching style in this 4 hour workshop.

Fiona will take you through a series of short and creative exercises to lose your inner 'perfectionist' and just enjoy the art of painting, before you move on to painting a piece on canvas.

All you need to bring are:

  • Acryllic paints - basic primary colours of white, black, red, yellow and blue (more if you like)
  • Brushes... range of flat and round head in variety of sizes... large is great!
  • A3 size paper minimum size
  • Charcoal and/or B grade pencils
  • A canvas of your choice - big or small - up to you

You can buy all these at the Warehouse or Spotlight for cheap.

A suggested donation/ Koha of NZ$40 is encouraged but you can pay what you can afford.

Your Tutor Fiona Thomas

Fiona started painting at a young age but put her brushes away during her working career and only picked it up again 30 years later.

After getting over her fear of not being 'good enough' after such a long break, she has gone on to exhibit 'Beginnings' at the Odlin Gallery in 2017, 'No Boundaries' at Expressions Gallery Upper Hutt 2017 and 'Uno' Garden Exhibition, El Carmoli, Murcia, Spain 2012.

She has a love of colour, line, depth of light and dark, and expressing oneself in paint and clay.

She believes you can use art as an outlet for feelings and ideas and that the creative process is often more important than the outcome, especially when beginning.

Fiona believes everyone is capable of creating if they allow themselves the freedom to let go and try!

"I see beauty in the ordinary as well as the extraordinary, and endeavour to teach people to truly see and express themselves and their surroundings freely in a non judgemental environment."

Fiona holds a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) from the Wellington College of Education and a Diploma of Art and Creativity from The Learning Connexion (2015) too.

This workshop will be held in 'The Barn' of Fiona's friend and student, Natalie Sisson, a welcoming and friendly environment with lots of space to spread out and paint!

Places are limited to 12 people. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be provided.
