ABSTRACT

The institutional structures of the industrial society are becoming increasingly incapable of improving fairness and progress in various parts of society. The idea of universal basic income has emerged as a potential solution for the challenge. However, it is not necessarily sufficient to merely reform systems of redistribution - what we need is new universalism that can tackle our diminishing sense of belonging. In addition to UBI, universal basic services and universal basic assets are fresh initiatives of new universalism. Demos Helsinki’s scenario workshop will explore the urban implications of UBXs - What will be the spatial and cultural possibilities and challenges? How could cities, governments, NGOs, and citizens work together to recreate fair institutional structures in urban context for entering the post-industrial era?
