From Impostor to Hero: How Being a Mentor Can Grow Your Career

Unity Technologies Mentorship Event: Hosted by Girls in Tech

We know from research that mentorship is a powerful tool for supporting the growth of the mentee, but what about the growth of the mentor? When mentors share their experiences, they are redefining their roles as leaders, sources of social change, and heroes. In this panel, women will discuss their experiences in being a mentor, how it helped their career, and what makes a good mentor.

For women and girls especially, mentorship is seen as a key means to bridge the gender gap and support both professional and academic advancement, but our review for scholarly literature on the impact for the mentors themselves garnered few results. It’s often cited that women experience impostor syndrome in the technology field. We believe that being a mentor can help to change that narrative.   We will examine dynamic definitions of effective mentorships, and how serving as a mentor develops important skills and alliances among women that translate into career growth.

Speakers:

Peggy Lee, Founder and Director of Made By Girls - Digital Media Academy

Carmen Badea, Staff Software Engineer at Intel Corporation
