Join us for a screening of Belle, directed by Amma Asante, written by Misan Sagay, and produced by Damian Jones. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Donna Aza Weir-Soley, Associate Professor of English and an affiliated member in African & African Diaspora Studies, Women’s Studies, and the Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University.

About the film:

Belle is a period drama about slavery, inter-racial love, and the life of a young women of mixed race in eighteenth century British society. Although the film is historical fiction, Belle brings to life the realities faced by a young woman of mixed race in Europe during the era of the Atlantic Slave trade. Belle has won several awards including the NAACP Image Award for Most Outstanding Picture 2015. Belle is must-see for audiences enticed by historical dramas and for those who seek greater understanding of how a young woman of multiracial ancestry came of age and navigated British society before abolition.
