About Union Depot

Union Depot has an important place in American railroad history and is one of the great railroad stations of the 20th century. During the late 1920s, Union Depot was in constant motion with 300 trains and 20,000 passengers every day. Union Depot continued to serve St. Paul as the main source of rail traffic until 1971 when regional rail service was restructured and the station was closed. The station remained out of service until the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority purchased the 33-acre Union Depot site in 2005 and transformed it into a state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly multimodal regional transportation hub that opened on December 8, 2012. By bringing together services including bus service, bicycles, and taxis, and eventually Amtrak, light rail, intercity bus service, commuter rail and high-speed rail to Chicago, Union Depot is opening its doors to a new generation of retail opportunities, arts and culture and events for the public to enjoy.
