African Night is an annual cultural showcase organized by the African Union Organization of the University of Northern Iowa. Performers from across the continent celebrate their culture through dance, drumming, spoken word, music, fashion, and a variety of other arts. This year’s theme is “We are Africa.” The heart of this theme is to pay homage to our roots as descendants of numerous vast and diverse civilizations. Our ancestors were farmers and laborers, authors and artisans, educators and physicians, mathematicians and engineers, kings and queens. Our dedication to striving for excellence, especially in the context of the African Diaspora, is what makes us great. African Night: We are Africa will highlight our history, celebrate our present, and explore the possibilities of our future.
Purpose: African Culture Night:
A night to promote and engage people in learning about different cultures in Africa through dance, fashion, and food. Different countries from different regions will be represented and students and community members will get to learn about African cultures in an authentic manner.
