Event description
Why self-owned companies are needed to Unfuck the Economy vol 3.

About this Event

The ownership movement is growing! In January 2019 the founders of Einhorn and in summer 2018 Ecosia announced that their companies will become self-owned. Dozens of Start-Ups followed. They are giving a legally binding promise to all customers, employees and the society to work for a purpose – not for shareholder-value maximization. This has the potential to transform our economy from the bottom up!

This time, a special guest is joining us: Perry Chen, founder and chairman of Kickstarter - the world's largest funding platform for creative projects - will tell you what he is thinking about steward-ownership.

Since our last events in March with more than 1000 guests the discussion about purposeful business has accelerated: Purpose is becoming the new normal. The central theme of this evening: First hand accounts from entrepreneurs who have direct experience with self-owned companies and steward-ownership:

  • Armin Steuernagel, co-founder Purpose: How steward-ownership can make the world a better place.
  • Waldemar Zeiler, Elisa Naranjo and Philip Siefer from einhorn: What has happened since our announcement to become self-owned in January? How does the transition look and feel like?
  • Nadia Boegli, co-founder of WildPlastic: Why I just founded a company that is a purpose-company from day one. And what it means for investors and money in general.
  • Christian Kroll, founder Ecosia: How the transition to a purpose-company can increase the feeling of security, for employees and founders alike.
  • Perry Chen, founder and chairman Kickstarter: Why we need alternative forms of ownership.
  • Kasia Odrozek, Mozilla foundation: Why steward-ownership serves the mission of Mozilla and how it can contribute to a healthier internet.

We also want to talk about the bigger picture:

  • What is the potential of steward-ownership to transform the platform-economy?
  • How could a new legal form create equal opportunities for mission-driven companies?
  • And how can the ownership-movement use the current momentum to create fundamental change?

Our well known Berlin based entrepreneurs from einhorn, ecosia, Wildplastic and Purpose will be joined by two special guests. Both are experts for the potential of ownership in the platform economy: Perry Chen has pioneered crowdfunding with Kickstarter. And Kasia Odrozek represents the Mozilla Foundation that stands behind the web-browser Mozilla Firefox, another exciting example of a steward-owned organisation.

Last but not least we will present you a proposal of how we can work together to establish steward-ownership as a new legal form of business in Germany. This could be a milestone for mission-driven business. There will be time for questions and networking during and after the event!

New the conversation and wondering what the hell a purpose company is?

The long version: Have a look at our last gathering or watch our first TEDx talk.

The (almost) short version: Purpose companies work for purpose maximisation rather than shareholder-value maximisation. Therefore, profits are primarily reinvested and serve the purpose of the company (rather than being a goal in themselves). Responsibility lies with the people and inside the organisation. Purpose companies own themselves and can't be sold to investors. But don’t worry: Everyone will be able to follow the conversation and we will give brief introduction to steward-ownership at the beginning of the conversation.
