  • Detailed discussion and exercises on the various symbols depicted on an at sea-level surface pressure map that impacts both coastal and offshore waters of the Pacific

  • Determining true wind direction and speed wind barb associated with key low and high pressure symbols exercise.

  • Discussion and follow up exercise on being able to anticipated specific weather conditions (such as cloud types, precipitation, visibility restrictions, and winds (e.g. true direction and speed)), all associated with common surface pressure chart symbols, from fronts, troughs, squall lines, and shear lines.

  • Discussion and follow up exercise on the difference between “Issued” and “Valid” from the U.S. National Weather Service’s (NWS) Ocean Prediction Center (OPC) analyses and forecast charts.

  • Finally, there will be a discussion and follow up exercise on the 24 -hour interval specific tracking and intensity trends (marine advisories and warnings) of the surface map’s L’s and H’s pressure centers.
