Event description
Healing from narcissistic abuse is a unique and complex grief-it’s a letting go of narratives, hopes, and people, aspirations, and beliefs.

About this Event

Grieving the living can be more complicated than grieving the dead. Grieving a relationship with someone with a narcissistic personality is more than just grieving the relationship. It’s about grieving lost opportunities, hopes, aspirations, narratives and sense of self. The loss of the relationship can sometimes feel like a relief, but in its wake come a complex set of reactions. In many ways a narcissistic relationship is a loss of innocence, and after a relationship characterized by manipulating, gaslighting, dismissiveness, invalidation, rage, confusion, and deceit, the cycle of grief can leave a person overwhelmed, anxious, helpless, hopeless and confused. The grief can be a painful wakeup call to what a person did not have, during childhood, in a marriage, or within a family. The grief of lost potential, the grief of lost time, the grief of lost identity, the grief of always feeling like “not enough” can feel deeply destabilizing. Understanding the cascade of reactions that come when a person finally decides to go no contact, or gray rock, or set boundaries, when a person goes through massive transitions such as getting a divorce, cutting ties with a family of origin, or leaving a career is important in your healing from these relationships. By understanding the transitions out of narcissistic abuse through a lens of grief, we can view this process through a compassionate, universal and human lens that allows survivors to move forward, transformed.
