Event Details

Understanding the Living Building Challenge online workshop provides an in-depth introduction to the Living Building Challenge ideology and certificate process. Attendees are the green building leaders in their community: design professionals, contractors, developers, owners, government officials and employees of public agencies. In short, anyone and everyone who can impact the development of the built environment.  This online workshop consist of 4 live webinars with supplemental reading and activities.  In order to earn your certificate of attendance you must attend all 4 webinars and participate in the activities.

Allison Capen: Seattle, Washington

Technical Director, Living Building Challenge, International Living Future Institute


 
 
Allison is a licensed architect and green building consultant with 15 years experience in green building design and consulting, as well as involvement in low –income housing development and administration. Immediately prior to joining the Institute, she was a Consultant at Paladino helping building teams improve their projects’ environmental performance, develop LEED Volume programs and coordinate LEED certifications. Over the last decade Allison has been continually involved in local environmental design advocacy, as both committee member and Chair of the Sustainable Design Resource Group for AIA Washington Council, the AIA Seattle Committee on the Environment and the What Makes It Green? event.  She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in the History and Theory of Architecture. Born in Minneapolis, MN, Allison has lived in Seattle since 1991.

Kathleen Smith: Seattle, Washington

LEED Fellow - Technical Director, Living Building Challenge, International Living Future Institute
Kathleen Smith is an architect with more than 20 years of experience in green building, most recently with her own firm, Ecosmith Architecture & Consulting, LLC. She is a LEED Fellow and a LEED Faculty member.  Kathleen worked with Davis Langdon where she conducted LEED reviews and consulted on many pioneering sustainable projects in California. She is also the co-author of two books, The Northwest Green Home Primer and Rebuilding Community in America: Housing for Ecological Living, Personal Empowerment, and the New Extended Family. Kathleen has a Bachelor and Master of Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in addition to a Permaculture Consultant's Design Certificate from the Permaculture Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sam Wright: Seattle, Washington
Technical Coordinator, Living Building Challenge / Seattle, WA

Sam is a certified sustainable building advisor with a background in non-profit program development and implementation. His years of construction experience have provided a working knowledge of buildings systems and assemblies. Sam’s career has spanned several continents and industries, taking him from an environmental non-profit and a community-focused co-op in Vancouver, BC to development NGOs in Kenya and Tanzania. Throughout, the overarching theme of his work has been the complementary priorities of social and environmental sustainability. Sam holds a double major in Geography and Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, and currently volunteers on Reach Out To Humanity’s Board of Directors. He is thrilled to provide support for the Institute’s Declare and JUST programs and the Living Building Challenge team.

Brad Liljequist: Seattle, Washington
Technical Director, Net Zero Energy Buildings and Living Community Challenge / Seattle, WA

As director of the Institute's Net Zero Energy and Living Community programs, Brad is at the forefront of a global transformation toward a carbon-free future. He directed development of the Petal and Net Zero Energy Certified zHome, the first multifamily zero net energy community in the United States, as well as Issaquah Fire Station 72, the world’s most energy efficient fire station and recipient of the international 2012 ASHRAE Technology award.  Brad has nearly three decades of experience catalyzing change in the fields of planning, environmental policy, urban design, construction management and sustainable building.  He was educated at Georgetown University, the University of St. Andrews and the University of Washington Evans School.
