UNDERSTANDING THE LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE ENERGY PETAL

Description: The Living Building Challenge Energy Petal is intended to signal a new age of design, wherein the built environment relies solely on renewable forms of energy and operates year round in a pollution-free manner.  In this 4-hour in-depth review of the Energy Petal, participants will gain an understanding of how to meet the Net Zero Energy Imperative of the Living Building Challenge. This interactive session will present detailed case studies of several Net Zero Energy Building Certified projects, identifying the design and operational challenges these projects had to overcome to meet their Net Zero Energy goals.  Appropriate for anyone working in the building industry, this workshop is particularly suited for participants interested in Net Zero Energy and the strategies and behavior change needed to achieve NZEB Certification.

- Identify the key components of the Water Petal 
- Discuss the rationale for restorative water design principles
- Understand successful strategies for compliance with the water petal performance area

Presenter Information 

Brad Lilliquist: Seattle, Washington

Technical Director, Living Building Challenge, International Living Future Institute

Brad managed development of Petal and Net Zero Energy Certified zHome, the first multifamily zero net energy community in the United States, as well as Issaquah Fire Station 72, the world’s most energy efficient fire station and recipient of the international 2012 ASHRAE Technology award.  He brings a pragmatic, results oriented focus to catalyzing deep change throughout the built environment, with a particular passion for zero carbon footprint buildings and communities.  Since the late 80s, he has been a change agent in the fields of urban design, environmental policy, planning, and sustainable building.  He is a cum laude graduate of Georgetown University (history) and holds a Master’s in environmental policy from the University of Washington Evans School.
