Event description

Description

Discover the fundamentals for building a strong STEM philosophy and common STEM language with stakeholders and leaders.

Educators are faced with an overwhelming amount of information regarding today’s STEM movement. Specifically teachers are asking, “What is STEM?” “What philosophy has my school adopted?” “Is my teaching consistent with best practices in STEM?”

Strides in STEM education call for providing opportunities for students to develop their critical and creative thinking skills. Many STEM initiatives, however, are top-down, where administrators focus on developing community support and funding. Our focus places an emphasis on teachers and their vital role in impacting student learning experiences.

During this course, participants will:

  • Engage in deep thinking about their own personal definition of STEM as related to outcomes for student learning and achievement, both in academics and lifelong learning

  • Consider characteristics of a holistic approach to STEM education, including intentional teaching and design moves that inspire students to engage in their learning in and outside of the classroom

  • Consider leader roles as a way to make changes in teaching and learning cultures

  • Discuss the importance of having a connected academic focus to community, work and global issues, where students are motivated to become informed, literate citizens

  • Engage in a framework for a holistic approach to STEM that supports the development of cross-curricular teaching and planning

COURSE IS AVAILABLE IN PERSON AND VIRTUALLY. Please specify your preference when registering.
