Event description

Description

How to approach and analyse works of contemporary art? What is art and what is not? What mediums, subjects and artists define 'modernity'? What are the key roles and functions in 'the art world'? How do galleries, art fairs and museums work in relation to each other? Why do people invest in contemporary art? How to talk and what to ask in conversation with artists? How does art influence the way we perceive the world around us? The contemporary art world offers unique educational and personal enhancement opportunities.

This 3-days (Thursday and Friday evening & Saturday the whole day) long intensive education programme serves as a trans-disciplinary framework to demystify contemporary art and explore its personal and societal impact.

Programme:

1 Dec. 18.30h-21.00h

Remembering Memory: What is ‘Contemporary Art’ in the Context of Art History?

A brief introduction to post-war contemporary art around the globe, explaining traditional mediums, new attitudes and introducing the art world’s actors, institutions and experimental nature. This session will focus on subjects of artistic enquiry, legacy building, mythology and the various filters and collaborators that take an artwork from the artist’s studio into the public eye. What is relevant? What will be relevant?

2 Dec. 18.30h-21.00h

Mediums and Messages in Contemporary Art. Understanding Contexts

Overview of traditional and contemporary mediums in art addressing questions of zeitgeist, conservation and future development. Drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance and so-called Post-Internet art will be introduced. The question ‘How to approach and understand contemporary artwork?’ will be in the centre of this lecture.

Expanded Fields of Inquiry: How Art Shapes Our Life

Art is a conduit to knowledge, the protecting of histories and the projections of futures. It is the one paradigm of constructive creation where poetry and failure are valued. What else can art teach us? How can it improve our analytical skills or work productivity? What are the transformative powers of art on personal as well as societal levels? In this lecture, we will analyse and discuss the ‘spillover’ of contemporary art into all possible fields of human activities in the recent decades. What potential can art bring into our lives?

The Harlan Levey Projects Art Gallery invites participants for lunch at the artistic brunch spot The Hope.

Guided Gallery Visits: How Galleries Operate?

Having established a new vocabulary regarding the language of contemporary art and looked into the intimate working spaces where art is made, the group will visit four galleries and be offered a chance to ask questions to gallery directors. How do galleries make their living? How does art receive a price tag? How does the market influence art?

Interactive Workshop: Curating Your Own Virtual Group Exhibition

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but is there a framework for qualifying “good art” that goes beyond subjective taste? In this final session, we will discuss the reviews, positions and questions written following the exhibition visits and participants will be asked to “virtually curate” a group exhibition using works photographed during the studio visits or gallery tour.

The successful participants will be awarded with the certificate signed by Denis Maksimov, the Harlan Levey Projects Art Gallery, and the Modern Education and Research Institute.

Price:

385 Euros per participant - sponsored admission
15% discount for those participants who followed the introductory lecture and knows the magic word. Valid till 07 July 2016
