Understanding Roles in General Practice: The Team Behind Your GP Surgery

Understanding Roles in General Practice: The Team Behind Your GP Surgery

Overview

Learn more about the variety of healthcare professionals who work in GP surgeries and how they work together to support patients.

When you visit a GP surgery you may expect to see a doctor or a nurse. In reality there is a much larger group of professionals who work together every day to support patients, families and the wider community. This talk will introduce the different roles that make up the general practice team and show how each one plays a part in caring for patients.

Primary care has changed significantly in recent years. With growing demand on the NHS there is an increasing need for a wide range of skills in GP surgeries. Attendees will be able to find out more about different careers, such as healthcare assistants, pharmacists, physician associates, paramedics working in general practice, social prescribers, physiotherapists and mental health practitioners, along with the more traditional roles of GPs and nurses. The session will explore what these professionals do, how they train and how they work together to provide safe and effective care. There will be real examples that show how the team responds to the needs of different patients and how each role contributes to their treatment and wellbeing. Join Senior Physician Associate and Lecturer, Chanceeth Chandrakanthan, to learn about the breadth of opportunities available in the NHS for our January instalment of the School of Health and Medical Sciences Lecture Series.
